Memory Verse
We should all be hiding God’s Word in our hearts! Use the Flip Chart Memory Verse Page as you play a memory verse game.
Explain the verse to your students as you encourage them to memorize it.
Studying God’s Word
Lesson Time
Have the students assemble in a circle away from the tables—either on the floor or in their chairs.
Bring your stuffed animal, Bible, lesson flip chart, and any items you prepared for this lesson.
Prayer
This prayer time is designed to help the students begin to understand some simple concepts about prayer and to encourage them to pray.
We start our Bible lesson with prayer. Turn to the Flip Chart Prayer Page. Briefly review the different types of prayer presented there.
- I love you prayers—Adoration
- I’m sorry prayers—Confession
- Thank you prayers—Thanksgiving
- Please prayers—Supplication
Today let’s say prayers of adoration and tell God we love him and praise him.
I’ll start. Dear God, you are always worthy of our praise and love. Today I praise you for . . . (insert personal prayer here).
Pass a special stuffed animal—prayer bear—around the circle, giving all the students an opportunity to pray, or choose a volunteer to stand beside you and pray.
Very good! Now let’s put our stuffed animal away, and we’ll answer our Bible Truth questions.
Bible Truths
These four questions will be repeated each week to help the students learn foundational truths.
- What is the most important book that has ever been written? Hold up your Bible. The Bible!
- What is in the Bible? God’s Word to man!
- All of God’s words in the Bible are what? True!
- Are there any mistakes in the Bible? No, God cannot lie or make mistakes!
Bible Pass Around
- Before Bible Pass Around, place a sticky note in your Bible to mark the first passage to be read.
We are going to start out today by looking into God’s Word, the Bible. Hold up Bible. God’s Word is true, and we can trust what it says. But where should we look? One of you will help me with that. We’re going to play Bible Pass Around. Whoever ends up with the Bible must hold it very carefully until it is time to look in it. When it is time to read, you can bring it to me, and we’ll open it to see what we are going to talk about today! Here’s what we’re going to do. I want everyone to count with me up to the number choose a number. (You may also choose to recite the books of the Bible, sing one of the lesson songs, or recite the memory verse as you do this activity.) We’ll start right here. Hand the Bible to the first student. As we say each number (or word), you must carefully pass the Bible to the person beside you. Remember, we don’t want to drop it or tear it. Then when we get to the last number (or word), whoever has the Bible will hold on to it until we are ready for it in our lesson. Are you ready? Let’s begin. Begin the lesson when finished with Bible Pass Around.
Pre-K Lesson
Review
- Don’t forget! Review the Optional Supplements and determine where you can use them.
Show the Lesson 6 Flip Chart. Last time, we talked about how God always keeps his Word safe. He won’t let anyone destroy it or ruin it. God preserves his Word so we can read it and learn everything we need to know about him.
-
King Jehoiakim didn’t want to learn from God’s Word. What did he try to do to it?
Destroy it. Burn it.
That’s right. Jehoiakim did not love God, so he didn’t want to hear what God had to say. But if you love God, his Word is something you always need to listen to because that’s where you learn how to obey God.
-
Today I’m going to start with a question. How many of you like puzzles?
Show of hands.
Show a simple puzzle that’s nearly completed. Finish putting it together as you speak. Puzzles can be a lot of fun. One of the best things about puzzles is putting in the last piece and seeing the finished picture! Show the students the finished puzzle.
-
But what if a piece were missing?
Take out a piece. Would I still be finished with my puzzle?
No.
No, I wouldn’t. If the puzzle is missing a piece, then it is not complete! That means it’s not finished yet.
-
So what do I need to have for my puzzle to be complete?
All the pieces.
That’s right. Put the last piece back in. I need to have all the pieces. And that makes it complete.
God’s Word Is Complete
- What about the Bible? Is it complete? Did God already finish it? Allow answers.
- Do you think God would leave some pieces out? Is anything missing? No!
-
No. God has already completed the Bible. It tells us the truth and everything we need to know about God. The Bible is a big book, isn’t it? There are two big parts in the Bible. Do you know what they are?
Old Testament and New Testament.
They are the Old Testament and the New Testament. Say those words with me: Old Testament and New Testament.
-
I’ll show you in my Bible. Who has the Bible? Bring it up now, please.
Make this a special time as the student brings the Bible.
Show them the sections in your Bible. The Old Testament was written before Jesus was born. It is older! The New Testament was written after Jesus was born and tells about Jesus’ life. It is newer.
So the Bible has two big parts, and together they make up the whole Bible. Hold up your Bible.
- Now, what if I took out the Old Testament? Would the Bible be complete? Would I still have the whole Bible? No!
-
What if I took out the New Testament? Would it be complete?
No!
- As you teach, refer often to the lesson flip chart to keep the children engaged.

God’s Word Won’t Change
Okay. I want everyone to stand up. I’m going to give you some instructions, but you have to listen very carefully and do what I do. Ready? We’re going to go fast! Give several commands, changing them quickly, such as stand on one foot, stand on both feet, hop on one foot, hop on both feet, turn to the right, turn to the left, sit down, stand up, etc.
-
Phew! Okay. Sit back down now. How many of you thought that was hard to do?
Show of hands.
It was hard because we kept changing what we were doing. When things change a lot it can be confusing and hard to follow. But that’s one great thing about God. The Bible says God will not change.
- Do you think God will change what the Bible says? No!
No! The Bible is complete, so it’s not going to change. It’s already finished and settled. Let’s read about that. Read Psalm 119:89 emphasizing “Forever.”
-
- Reread the verses as necessary so the students can hear the answers straight from God’s Word!
That’s right. God’s Word will never change; it’s fixed in heaven forever. So we know we can trust it and obey what it says because it will be the same tomorrow and the next day. God’s Word won’t change.
We could say that God’s Word is “set in stone.” And I happen to have a stone with me!
This stone has part of the memory verse on it. I’ll read it to you. Hold up your stone with “Forever, O Lord, your word is firmly fixed in the heavens,” written on it. Read it to the students.
- Write the words, “Forever, O Lord, your word is firmly fixed in the heavens” on the stone with a permanent marker.
Use the hand wipe to try to wipe the verse off the rock. I can’t wipe it off either. It can’t be changed! These words will stay on this rock! And the Bible is like that—it is complete, and it will always stay the same. It is firmly fixed in heaven FOREVER!
-
How long will God’s true Word last?
Forever.
That’s right! God’s Word is complete—it won’t change. And we can believe what it says forever!

All of God’s Word Is True
But is the whole Bible true? Can we trust everything in it?
Let’s read about that. Read Psalm 119:160.
-
- Reread the verses as necessary so the students can hear the answers straight from God’s Word!
-
How much of God’s Word is truth?
The sum. All of it. The whole thing.
Yes. God wants us to know that ALL of his Word is true. Hold up your Bible. And it is complete, God already finished it; there is nothing missing, so we can trust the whole thing.
God’s Word Won't Change
Now I want everyone to stand up. I’m going to give you some instructions, but you have to listen very carefully and do what I do. Ready? We’re going to move fast. Give several commands, changing them quickly, such as stand on one foot, stand on both feet, hop on one foot, hop on both feet, turn to the right, turn to the left, sit down, stand up, etc.
- Phew! Okay. Sit back down now. How many of you thought that was confusing and hard to follow? Show of hands.
-
Why was it confusing?
Because you kept changing the commands.
I kept changing what we were supposed to do, right? And when things change, it can become confusing. But that’s one great thing about God and his Word. The Bible says God will not change. There is a word that means God will always be the same—immutable. Say that with me: immutable.
So we’ve learned a few things about God’s Word: it is complete, it is all true, and it will never change. We know we can trust it and obey what it says because it won’t be different tomorrow or the next day.
We could say that God’s Word is “set in stone.” And I happen to have a stone with me!
- Write the words, “Forever, O Lord, your word is firmly fixed in the heavens” on the stone with a permanent marker.
-
How long will God’s Word be fixed in heaven?
Forever.
Try to erase the verse with an eraser. That’s right. These words are “set in stone,” which means they can’t be changed. I can’t erase the verse from this stone.
Use the hand wipe to try to wipe the verse off the rock. I can’t wipe it off either. It can’t be changed! These words will stay on this rock! And God’s Word is like that—it is complete, and it will always be the same. It is fixed in heaven FOREVER!
-
How long will God’s true words last?
Forever.
That’s right! We can believe God and what he says all the time! The Bible is complete and will never change. And we can trust all of it because God’s entire Word is true.
Lesson Review
We all learn best with review and repetition! We encourage you to play a lesson review game.
Story Time
- Last time, Justin’s mom and Jessie’s mom were making something. Do you remember what they were making? Strawberry preserves, or jam.
-
Right. Their moms were making strawberry preserves, like jam. Then what happened to the picture Justin and Jessie were drawing?
Allow answers.
That’s too bad that Ellie colored on the first picture Justin and Jessie made. But in the end, everything worked out okay. And Justin and Jessie learned what it means to preserve something. They also heard how God preserves his Word.
Let's find out what Justin and Jessie are doing this time.
Read the Justin & Jessie Story as you show the picture.
Some people, like Matt’s family, don’t believe the Bible is important. But God gave us his Word so we can learn about him and how he sent his Son, Jesus, to die on the cross so sinners can be forgiven. Only the Bible has the whole truth about God.
Song Time
Use the downloaded music to sing the songs. Lyrics can be found on the Flip Chart Song Time Lyrics Page and on the Song Sheet at the end of this lesson.
You may want to add stomping, clapping, and musical instruments or make up hand motions to any of the songs!
Let’s sing the song that reminds us to be sure to read the Bible. Review the words then sing the song together once or twice.
The gospel is the good news we learn about Jesus in God's complete Word. Let's sing about the gospel news. Review the words then sing the song together once or twice. Teach verse 2 today.
- Pass out the Student Take Home Sheets and remind students to practice the memory verse this week.
Turn to the Flip Chart Memory Verse Page. Let’s do our memory verse song now. Sing the song together once or twice.
Sing other class favorites or songs from the Additional Songs list as time allows.
